Migration Studies

The MSc in Migration Studies is a nine-month interdisciplinary degree offered jointly by the School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography and the Department for International Development.

In recent decades human mobility has developed new dynamics and poses new social, economic and political challenges. The University of Oxford has played a leading role in the emerging field of migration research. The Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS) is already a centre of gravity in Migration Studies within the UK. Its research strength is complemented by faculties in the Department for International Development with focuses on forced migration and on development-migration nexus.

MSc Migration Studies

Drawing on the intellectual resources of its two parent departments, the interdisciplinary MSc in Migration Studies enables students to explore human mobility as an intrinsic part of the broader processes of development and global change; and to address the causes and consequences of migration and how these are shaped by governments, societies, and migrants themselves.

The degree has five main taught components, in addition to a 15,000 word dissertation:

  • Anthropology of Migration;
  • Migration and the Economy;
  • Migration and Development;
  • Governance of Migration;
  • Methods in Social Research.
