Departmental Lecturer

Vice-Chair of the Institute of Human Sciences

Bio

Teresa obtained her BSc in Biochemistry and her PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Bath. She joined School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography as the Departmental Lecturer in Genetics for Human Sciences in 2017, and since then has held roles including Chair of Examiners for Preliminary exams. She is currently Vice-Chair of the Institute of Human Sciences.

Teresa began life in Oxford as a postdoctoral scientist in what was the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics, followed by further postdoctoral work in the Department of Statistics. She is currently a senior postdoctoral scientist with the Modernising Medical Microbiology unit of the Nuffield Department of Medicine, a post she holds concurrently with her departmental lectureship.

Research interests

Teresa’s research is centred around developing new molecular methods for diagnosing infection. Using cutting-edge genome sequencing technology, her previous research focused on prosthetic joint infections and gonorrhoea; identify pathogens and detecting genetic markers of antibiotic resistance in samples directly from patients, with the aim of faster time to diagnosis than current gold-standard methods. Teresa has also been involved in studies using targeted sequencing for the detection of influenza and RSV, and her current work aims to develop a rapid test for infection that could be deployed in real-time during surgery.
