Benjamin Hegarty is a medical anthropologist with research interests at the intersection of queer theory, transgender studies, and global health. He addresses these concerns in his first book, The Made-Up State (Cornell University Press, 2022), which was awarded the 2023 Anne Bolin and Gilbert Herdt Prize in Human Sexuality by the American Anthropological Association.
His current research draws on methods from science and technology studies to conduct a transnational study of virus-human-animal relations in Southeast and East Asian scientific and activist communities. He holds a PhD in anthropology from the Australian National University, was a McKenzie Fellow in anthropology at the University of Melbourne, and is currently a Senior Research Associate in the Asia and Pacific Health Program at the Kirby Institute for Infection and Immunity in Society, UNSW Sydney.
Benjamin is a 2024/2025 Fellow at the Paris Institute for Advanced Study, supported by a French Institutes for Advanced Studies (FIAS) Fellowship, co-funded by a Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement. In Paris, he collaborates with Professor Frederic Keck at the Laboratoire d’anthropologie sociale at École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) on research about symbiotic viruses. At Oxford Anthropology, he works on topics related to viruses and queer theory with Professor Eben Kirksey, and contributes to broader research initiatives related to viral theory.
