Book launch: Mukbang, Food Performance, and Digital Media

Join us for a vibrant discussion about tasty larger-than-life foods, viral digital media, and all things mukbang! What can outrageous foods and their eating tell us about what it means to be human? From pastel packets of instant ramen to neon candies, the foods of mukbang have overflowed into our social media algorithms and into our food craving imaginations. Join us for the presentation and discussion of the book Mukbang, Food Peformance, and Digital Media by authors Dr. Ashley Thuthao Keng Dam (Portland State University, Jesus College '18, University of Oxford) and Professor Stanley Ulijaszek (St. Cross College, University of Oxford), as they are joined in conversation by anthropologist Maria Murad (University of Oxford) and London-based cook and writer Jago Rackham. Afterwards, there will (obviously) be snacks and refreshments.

Ticket registration is required to enter.

The Workshop planned for 2.30pm has been cancelled but the other special events on 29 May 2026 to celebrate the publication of Mukbang, Food Performance, and Digital Media by Ashley Thuthao Keng Dam and Stanley Ulijaszek are going ahead as planned:

These comprise the Seminar at 12pm in the Pitt Rivers Museum and the Book launch at 5.30pm in 64 Banbury Road.
