Mukbang, Food Performance, and Digital Media

Mukbang is performative eating online. In this seminar, co-authors Dr. Ashley Thuthao Keng Dam and Professor Stanley Ulijaszek dive into the structure and mechanics of mukbang as digital food performance outlined in their new book, Mukbang, Food Performance, and Digital Media, published by Routledge in April 2026. With an interdisciplinary approach engaging digital ethnography, content analysis, contemporary art practice and performance study, this seminar examines how everyday eating online in mukbang shapes understandings, engagements, and expectations of food, eating, and related systems and processes. Using a performance framework, attention is given to the myriad ways that mukbang is composed and articulated by performing mukbangers, as well as its consumption and digestion by their audiences.

Part of a series of special events on 29 May 2026 to celebrate the publication of Mukbang, Food Performance, and Digital Media by Ashley Thuthao Keng Dam and Stanley Ulijaszek.
