Jaana Serres is an anthropologist of media and (post-)globalization with a focus on transnational flows of popular culture from Africa. She has conducted extensive ethnographic fieldwork in West African music industries, and across their commercial, financial, and technological networks in Western Europe, the Arabian Peninsula, and Southeast Asia. Her doctoral research examined the political imaginaries and world-making projects that have shaped the Afrobeats industry in Lagos, Nigeria.

She completed her DPhil at the University of Oxford as a Ioma Evans-Pritchard scholar in 2023. From 2022 to 2025, she held a fellowship from the Dutch National Sector Plan for the Humanities and Social Science at the Department of Media and Journalism Studies of the University of Groningen.

Prior to her academic career, she practiced law in New York, Paris, and London, where she advised governments, international institutions, and multinational corporations. She is a member of the New York bar.
