Thesis: Back-to-the-land migration and agricultural development in rural Japan
Research: My research explores the recent rise of back-to-the-land migration in Japan and its implications for Japan’s declining agricultural sector. Together with the motivations, values, and goals of an urban youth choosing to relocate in rural areas to pursue a career in agriculture, this ethnography focuses on rural migrants’ experiences and the obstacles encountered along their transition. In particular, emphasis is placed on the unfolding of support schemes for new agricultural entrants and how institutions articulate values, knowledge, and behavioural models.
