Photo Wallahs

In their move to India, after more than a decade of filmmaking with Aboriginal communities in Australia, the MacDougalls also shifted gear stylistically in making Photo Wallahs. Subtitled ‘an encounter with photography in Mussoorie’ (one of the British Raj’s ‘hill stations’ in the north of India), the film explores amateur and professional photographic practices in an episodic fashion. An enchanting film, it went on to win many prizes, as well as to open up theoretical debates within visual anthropology about the nature of photography.
