Making the Invisible Visible: Economic Sanctions and Graphic Novellas & Jina is Jina

During Iran’s 2022 Woman, Life, Freedom uprising, the arts harnessed diverse cultural referents to celebrate the country’s ‘champion girls’, from Persian mythology to the modern era’s lores of revolution. But Islamic signifiers were nearly entirely absent in these non-governmental narratives. Dr Siamdoust discusses some of the recurrent tropes in the visuals and music produced in the wake of the uprising, the significance of the waning of ‘Fatima’, and the Islamic Republic’s policy of cultural duality.
