(Ellen Hovde, Albert Maysles, David Maysles, Muffie Meyer, 1975, 100 mins)
A classic observational documentary from the North American ‘Direct Cinema’ school; the film depicts a mother and daughter, distant relatives of Jackie Kennedy, living in genteel poverty in a decaying mansion in East Hampton. The women seemed locked into some kind of co-dependent relationship where it is never clear who is actually looking after whom. The film raises many issues, not least ethical ones.
