School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography tops the 2026 QS World University Rankings for Anthropology

The School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography is very pleased to be ranked number one for Anthropology in the QS World University Rankings 2026. Having also secured the top position in 2022, 2023, and 2024 this year’s ranking reflects the continued excellence of our research and the achievements of our students. Given the strength and depth of research and study in anthropology globally this award is particularly meaningful.

The School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography at the University of Oxford is the largest anthropology department in the UK. Through our uniquely wide-ranging approach we produce internationally recognised research, and our teaching engages with all kinds of contemporary issues. Our department is highly diverse and international, with over 70% of our students taking graduate level degrees coming from outside the UK. Our work is guided by an ethos of openness, tolerance and respect for all.  

The QS World University Rankings by subject are compiled annually to help prospective students identify the leading universities in a particular subject. Research citations, student employment outcomes, along with the results of major global surveys of employers and academics, are used to rank universities.
