Anthropology ranked 1st in the QS World University Rankings 2023

We are delighted to announce that for the second year in a row, the University of Oxford is ranked 1st in the world for Anthropology in QS World University Rankings 2023, published on 22 March 2023.

The QS World University Rankings by subject are compiled annually to help prospective students identify the leading universities in a particular subject. Research citations, along with the results of major global surveys of employers and academics, are used to rank universities.

David Pratten, Head of School of Anthropology & Museum Ethnography said: ‘The ranking confirms that the School produces internationally recognised research and delivers teaching on a wide range of intellectually challenging and socially pressing issues. Achieving the top spot is also a recognition of our staff’s dedication and of the engagement of our students.”

The School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography is a dynamic and stimulating department, the largest and arguably the most diverse in the UK, with an ethos of openness and tolerance at its heart.  The School prides itself on its interdisciplinary and wide-ranging approaches to solving real world problems that contribute to the promotion of intercultural understanding and tolerance.

David Pratten added: ‘Our mission is to be a world leader in all forms of anthropological research and to train the next generations of anthropologists, whether working in the academy or outside it, through research-driven teaching programmes that produce future leaders in their fields. This ranking confirms we are on the right track.’
