Oxford University Anthropological Society

Founded in 1909, the Anthropological Society works to promote an interest in anthropology and to support students and researchers in anthropology at Oxford University.  We are run by and for both students and staff of the School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography.  For the past century, the Society has formed a central part of Oxford anthropology.

Every year, the Society holds a variety of events to promote the social and intellectual life of the School and those interested in anthropology.  If you have any suggestions for events, please get in touch with the committee.

Membership in the Society is open to all members of Oxford University, including Visiting Students and those registered to read for diplomas and certificates, and under some circumstances to members of other academic or professional institutions.

Those wishing to join the Society who are not members of the University are encouraged to apply and will be accepted into membership with respect to available space on the rolls and in accordance with University statutes and guidelines.

Benefits of membership include:

  • Free or heavily discounted admission to all Society events
  • Discounts on Society merchandise, when available (hoodies, etc.)
  • A chance to vote, run for committee positions, and influence the activities of the Society

If you wish to join the Society, please send a cheque payable to the Oxford University Anthropological Society, together with a note indicating your preferred category of membership and your contact details, to:
