In this highly influential film, anthropologist Jean Rouch and sociologist Edgar Morin take to the streets of Paris to ask people ‘are you happy?’. As the film progresses themes emerge: race relations, the Algerian war, the Holocaust… A foundational work of cinéma verité it closes with the now-famous scene of the filmmakers walking through the galleries of the Musee de l’Homme discussing the film which they have just screened to its protagonists: Rouch turns to Morin and says ‘I think we are in trouble…’
