Dr Mar is an-award winning social anthropologist and a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Oxford. She is also the first Senior Burmese female academic at the University of Oxford and is the inaugural Aung San Suu Kyi Gender Research Fellow at the University of Oxford. She is currently working as co-investigator on an ESRC-funded project on ‘Religion, Nationalism, and Gender-based Violence in Transitioning Myanmar’ at Department of Politics and International Relations.  Dr Mar has previously taught as a lecturer at the Australian National University. 

She is considered as a leading Burmese female academic with a rare combination of her scholarly excellences, passionate humanitarian vision with technical visual skills. She successfully connects her professional passion and research practice to a transformative outcome for social intervention approach on issues of gender equality, child protection, education reforms, ethnicity, structural violence, sustainable development and peace. She has been working on gender in ethnic areas including Rakhine state for many years. 

In addition to her academic work, Dr Mar is a senior gender and technical advisor as well as country advisor for various international agencies, including the United Nations, DFID, the EU, and the Humanitarian and Resilience Programme (HARP) as well as Australian Government organizations including the Department of Foreign Affairs, AusAID and the Australian Federal Police. She was selected as one of very few International Election Observers in the historic election in Burma in 2015 She led as a delegate member of the University Oxford delegation teams to Myanmar for four years.

Dr Mar's awards include Australia’s ‘Excellence in Gender Research’ award, the Australian ‘Unsung Hero Award’ and the ‘UN 100 Years 100 Women Award’.  She is the producer of the acclaimed documentary film, Dreams of Dutiful Daughters (2013). She is the co-editor of The Oxford-Myanmar Policy Brief Series She is the producer of an acclaimed documentary, Dreams of Dutiful Daughters (2013). She is one of the organisers and key note speakers of the two largest international conference in Myanmar, at Yangon University and Mandalay University in 2014 and 2018.
