Frontier Encounters: how material structures engage with conceptual landscapes

Alex is interested by the processes through which ways of thinking about the world are communicated through material environments to the people who inhabit, move through, modify and materially reform those spaces. In particular he is concerned with the unpredictability with which people respond to newly imposed material structures and the syncretic ideologies that result from such dynamic human-material engagements. His fieldwork in northern Pakistan aims to probe the development of such syncretic ideologies in an environment of fluid state, religious, and touristic material encounter.
