Subtitled ‘A multimodal perspective on butoh dance’, this video article examines the practice of metamorphosis in the Japanese dance movement approach of butoh, focusing on techniques for ‘becoming a caterpillar’ (aka, ‘becoming a wave’). The video adopts a sensory anthropology perspective which attends to the micro-phenomenological dimensions of the practice, exploring them multimodally through a combination of textual, graphic, dance, and performance re-enactments. 25 mins viewing, followed by discussion.

GTC Medical Anthropology Film and Discussion Group - Film Programme Hilary 2022
Inner/Outer
3.30-5pm, Tuesdays (Weeks 4, 6 and 8) on Teams
Convened by Paola Esposito (paola.esposito@anthro.ox.ac.uk)
The GTC Medical Anthropology Film & Discussion Group explores the extent to which film can complement, enrich and further the study of medical anthropology themes, topics and methods. After watching selected clips, we discuss a film’s content and approach, and interrogate its capacity to support the analysis of issues relating to illness, crisis, health and wellbeing.
This term we focus on the theme of ‘Inner/Outer’.
