Dr John McManus

Dr John McManus is a Postdoctoral Associate at the University of Oxford's school of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography. His interests centre on migration and popular culture, especially sport, music and social media with an emphasis on imaginaries, technologies, space, selfhood and play.

John completed his PhD dissertation in January 2016. Playing the game: a study of transnational Turkish football fans, imaginations and the internet was funded by an Economic and Social Research council scholarship, and explores how the internet affects the generation of football fan clubs in the Turkish diaspora. Based on online social network analysis, life story interviews and ethnographic fieldwork with football fans in London and Cologne, it foregrounds the importance of sport, technologies and playfulness in practices of belonging and identity in 21st century diaspora communities.

He graduated with an MPhil in Middle Eastern Studies from Oxford University and holds an undergraduate degree in English Literature and History from Sheffield University.
