Teaching and research interests
Medical anthropology, dance, embodiment, social and historical aspects of population obesity
Caroline Potter (née Parler) is Departmental Lecturer in Social Anthropology at the University of Oxford. After completing a first degree in chemical engineering at the University of South Carolina, USA, she undertook postgraduate studies in medical anthropology at Oxford. Her D.Phil. research (2003-07) focused on sensory experience and bodily learning, for which she undertook professional contemporary dance training in London as part of her fieldwork. Her current research explores notions of energy, as they are applied to bodily practices ranging from the intense (professional dance) to the mundane (eating). She is Deputy Director of the Unit for Biocultural Variation and Obesity (www.oxfordobesity.org), an Oxford-based interdisciplinary research group that develops collaborative work on global obesity trends across the social and medical sciences.
